Year 5 & 6 – RNLI Water Safety

The RNLI visited school to teach classes about the importance of staying safe around water. We learned about identifying risks of playing in and around water, how to save someone who is in trouble in water and different risks at the beach, as well as the meaning of the RNLI flags at the beach.

Year 5 – Computing – 3D Modelling

We have been using the program TinkerCAD to create 3D models of cameras; inserting 3D shapes, holes and text.

Year 5 – Trip – Manchester Museum

We visited the Manchester Museum to take a trip through time on their Time Odyssey adventure. Using iPads, augmented reality and an interactive game, we saw incredible exhibits, marvelled at interesting artefacts and were set challenges to help our historic character return to their time period.

Fire and Rescue visit

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue visited us today to teach us all about water safety.

Swimming Gala 🏊🏻‍♀️🏅

A big congratulations to our talented swimmers who proudly represented the school at Wednesday’s Swimming Gala and brought home these fantastic medals! 🏅🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️

Holy Communion Presentation

We presented our Holy Communion children with prayer cards and holy medals today to commemorate this very special sacrament. What a wonderful way to mark this special occasion!

Holy Communion

Recently, some of our children celebrated the special sacrament of First Holy Communion.

It was a wonderful occasion filled with faith, joy and celebration, and we are incredibly proud of the children for reaching this important milestone in their spiritual journey. Thank you to their families, parish and staff for supporting them throughout their preparation.

Year 5 – Science – Reversible and Irreversible Changes

We have learnt about soluble and insoluble materials, as well as reversible and irreversible changes; practising different methods of separation and partaking in observational experiments to witness these changes in the classroom.

Year 5 – Art – Henri Rosseau / William Morris

We have looked at the colourful and nature-based works of Rosseau and Morris and have practised using their techniques to create our own art in our sketchbooks.

Year 5 – Music – Classroom Jazz

In Music, we have been learning about jazz and improvising using specific notes and keys to create our own compositions.

Year 5 – World Book Day

We celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as our favourite characters – including a selection from our class book ‘Percy Jackson’ and joining in with the national FA quiz.

Year 5 – Science – Properties of Materials

In Science, we have been testing the properties of materials including magnetism, heat insulation and electrical insulation.

Homework Coffee Afternoon

As always, we were delighted to welcome families into school to celebrate and share all the fantastic effort children have put into their homework projects. Thank you for supporting your child to be creative and share their learning. We were so impressed with each and every project.

Year 5 – Big Lent Walks

Year 5 – PE – Seated Balance and Floor Work

In PE, we have been focusing on using core muscles and upper body strength to transition objects whilst holding a position.

Mass and Confession

Y3, Y5 and Y6 attended mass today with the parish. Y3 have been learning about the Liturgy of the Eucharist so they brought up the offertory whilst Y5 and Y6 said the readings and bidding prayers. After mass, children were then invited to confession as part of their Lenten journey.

Safer Internet Day 💻

Today, the whole school took part in an assembly lead by Mr Parry for Safer Internet Day. They discussed how AI can be used to help us but also has its limitations.

Big Lent Walk 🚶🏼‍♂️✝️

Year 5 and Year 6 made a start on their contribution to schools efforts for the Big Lent Walk and completed a circular walk around the local area.

Kindness Tree 🌳

This week, David was chosen to go on our kindness tree for providing support and comfort to friends who sometimes feel lonely.

Last week, Victor was chosen to go on the kindness tree for helping younger members of our school with their Maths in After School Club. This goes to show that kindness at St Jude’s stretches beyond the normal school day 👏🏻

Year 5 – Trip – ENO ‘Finish This’ Celebration

After our term-based project in Music (set for us by the English National Opera), creating our own composition. We went to Victoria Hall in Bolton to celebrate with other schools in the North West that took part in the project. In the morning, we had chance to compose a new operatic piece of music with the other schools and then in the afternoon we got to watch some ENO opera short productions and show off our own class composition of ‘Royal Purple’ (please see the link to listen to our song yourselves!)

CAFOD Workshops

CAFOD volunteers, Jim and Doreen, spent time in KS2 speaking to the children about the work of CAFOD. They focused on the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Solidarity and how ‘A Better World Needs all of Us’. The children had a fantastic morning learning about how everyone can play a small part to help our global family.

Year 5 – PE – Static Balance

Whilst some of the children still complete their swimming qualification, the rest of Year 5 have been busy for the last few weeks of term practising and challenging their static balance skills back at school. Some of us more successfully than others!

Year 5 – Computing – Micro:Bits

We have been using complex coding software to program Micro:Bits for various purposes and games in Computing.

Year 5 – XMAS Quiz

At Christmas, we celebrated with Mr Elwell’s big Christmas quiz, including a terrible food round, where we tried the cookies that Mrs Claus made after losing her glasses. She had certainly made some interesting (disgusting) additions to her ingredients list!

Year 5 – Celebration of the Word

We celebrated the Word together with a theme of kindness and showing love.

We have been looking at different bridge structures and types of bridges and making some working models in class.

The whole school went to Mass today. Father Michael told us the story of Saint Nicholas.

Art workshop

Years 4, 5 and 6 had the amazing opportunity to attend an art workshop at The Edge today. We talked about Jesus and designed crowns inspired by Him being the Light of the World. 👑 💫

Homework coffee afternoon

A huge well done and thank you for all of your amazing homework projects. We can tell how much effort has gone into them. 🏅

Year 5 – School Council Voting

Year 5 – RE – Jubilee Year of Hope – Window of Hope

We created a beautiful ‘Window of Hope’ for the Jubilee year and celebrated it by holding a Prayer & Liturgy. We celebrated the word with prayers, a reading from Romans 5:1 and making the sign of peace with each other (as the scripture on our window describes the peace that Jesus has granted us through our new covenant with the Lord).

‘Romans 5:1 Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.’

Year 5 – PSHE – World Mental Health Day

For World Mental Health Day we learned about different ways of coping with stress and all partook in a class meditation, breathing and affirmation activity.

🧠 💛 World Mental Health Day 2025 💛 🧠 On Friday, our School Council spoke to the whole school about World Mental Health Day and why we were wearing yellow – to show support and raise awareness for mental health. They also launched a Kindness Challenge, encouraging everyone to be extra kind to others throughout the week. It was a lovely reminder that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference

Year 5 – Science – Air Resistance Experiment

Back to School Prayer and Liturgy

Mr Wilson led our back to school Prayer and Liturgy. We each thought about how we can shine our light this new school year.

Bringing Hope to Alder Hey Children’s hospital

Year 5 wrote letters of hope which were hand delivered by Bobby whilst he was there to see his wonderful doctors at Alder Hey. Such inspirational letters to bring a joy to other children. Well done Year 5!

Reading at the Cathedral

We were delighted to receive professional photographs taken of our children reading the bidding prayers at the Good Shepherd Mass in the Cathedral at the beginning of June. We were so proud of our children and how they represented our school.

Y5&Y6 Town Sports- 24.06.25

Well done to the children who took part in the Wigan Town Sports event at Robin Park Arena today. We are extremely proud of all the children for trying their best and cheering each other on! A big well done to John who has made it to the final for the 80m sprint, good luck John!

Year 5 – PE – Judo

Year 5 enjoyed a ferocious first judo lesson on Thursday.

Year 5 – Pentecost – Prayer and Liturgy

On Thursday, Year 5 led a prayer and liturgy to celebrate Pentecost. It was attended by their grown ups and the Key Stage 2 classes. They did an excellent job at organising the event: designing invitations, creating a perfect gathering, enacting the Fruits of the Spirit, choosing the song, writing a prayer and encouraging grown ups to choose their own path for spiritual growth in the Holy Spirit.

Year 5 – Music – ENO ‘Finish This’ Project

Year 5 spent Spring term composing and practising the performance of the instrumental part of their English National Opera project with Carmel. We chose the colour BLUE (cobalt) to represent with our music and created a libretto of a number of different words that we associated with the colour, some of which we used within our opera pieces. We also had the ENO education team and official ENO photographer, Jason Lock, visit the class to observe our hard work on the projects so far and take pictures in action for the ENO’s ‘Finish This’ project and website. We sent off our project at the end of Easter, and the ENO composers were so impressed that they created an animated video around our composition. What an amazing opportunity! In PE the children were practising different types of movement and stance when in-control-of and passing a variety of objects around.

Y5 Science – Properties of Materials

In Science, the children have been investigating mixing materials with a liquid to discover if they are soluble or insoluble

Year 5 – Science – The Earth’s Rotation and Revolution

In Science, we have been learning about how the Earth spins on its axis every 24 hours, which causes our night and day time. We have also been studying the effects of the Earth’s axis on seasons in the Northern and Southern hemispheres as the Earth orbits the Sun.

Year 5 – PE – Coordination & Counterbalancing

In PE, we have been focusing on our coordination skills with our footwork; walking forwards and backwards along a line in different ways using balancing skills to assist us. Alongside this, we have been working with a partner to practise using our weight to counterbalance them in different shapes and forms.

Year 5 – DT Suspension Bridges

We have been working as groups to create bridges in class that have been able to hold the weight of toy cars.

Year 5 – RE – Commitment Cards

At the end of our topic ‘Belonging’ in RE – we have looked at the concepts of fidelity, commitment and responsibility with a focus on service to God and Christianity. As a celebration, we have made ‘Commitment Cards’ to take home and show our love for others by promising to serve them in our own chosen way.

Year 5 – English – Mary Jackson Court Case Roleplay

We have been studying the ‘Hidden Figures’ book in English, about the Civil Rights Movement and the inspirational black women of NACA and NASA during the 20th century. During this lesson, we created a roleplay script between Mary Jackson and a judge at the local court, as she asked to be given an equal education to others. A great chance to practice using a formal and official tone with our writing! Once created, children acted out the moment.

Year 5 – DT

In DT, Year 5 were looking at different times of beams and pillars when building bridges and the structural benefits and weaknesses of different types of bridge.

Year 5 – The Solar System

In Science, we have learned about orbits and the 8 planets in our solar system. We all wrote our own quirky mnemonic to help us remember the order of the planets from the sun.

Year 5 PE – Endball and Spatial Control Skills

In PE we have been practising our ball control skills and using these to improve our Endball gameplay.

Science – Air Resistance Experiment

In Science, Year 5 have been observing the effects of air resistance on parachutes. They have been investigating to find the relationship between the surface area of the parachute and the resulting air resistance; measuring this by seeing the time it takes for them to reach the ground when dropped.

Music – An Intro to Jazz

In Year 5 Music, we have started listening to Jazz and had a go at playing along on the chime bars.

Joan Miro

In Art, Year 5 have started researching the Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miro. They discovered that his artistic talents were evident from a young age although his family did not agree with his passion for the subject. He developed his love for surrealist art in his adult years when he became an inspiration to other artists.
